building a community through art
After the Getting There project with IRISS we found that there was a need to try to bring the different parts of the areas of the community together. In 2018 we were approached by artist studio Nadfly who were working with Falkirk Council's Take the Right Route team to promote walking. With funding from Paths for All, a project to build the community and promote walking launched.
Nadfly worked with many different groups in the community, reaching out to as many different groups of all ages as possible. They were training Master Lantern Makers to build paper lanterns which would be used for the Lantern Walk in February 2019. Hundreds of lanterns were made and given out to the community for the lantern walk around the community on 27th Feb.
Nearly 400 people of all ages turned out to walk with their lanterns around the village. The route took people through the newer areas and older areas. Many people said that they went to places they had never been in the village or would never have thought of walking before now. The Lantern Walk was followed by a permanent art installation called Monument to a Landscape. Nadfly designed a route around the village with nine solid granite way markers placed at different places throughout the whole village as well as a map in Valley Park with clues to help people find them.
